I just finished reading this during my commute this morning and felt sucker punched by the last fifty pages. The sudden and, I felt, exploitative use of September 11th to end the novel was completely unnecessary. You get wrapped up in the petty and inane fights of these awful people and you want an actual resolution - really any kind of climax - to all of the tension that’s mounted over the previous 420 pages. For Messud to pull the attacks out of her ass if they could explain away all loose ends is not only lazy, but cheap.
I’m looking forward to see what Noah Baumbauch does with the script, though. I’ll report back once I can compare the two.
