For eight years, photographer Nell Dickerson traveled across the South taking portraits of dogs committed to the deep-seated tradition of watching the world. Those photographs comprise her latest book, Porch Dogs, which includes sixty pups, from a Basset Hound in Memphis, Tennessee to a Labrador Retriever in Point Clear, Alabama.
Literally the best possible coffee table book. And yes, I love Garden & Gun’s website.
Now, the actual effect of the recount is obviously something of a side issue when assessing the actions of the Court. Nobody knew the outcome of the recount, only that it threatened to make Al Gore president, and stopping it would guarantee Bush’s victory. That is the environment in which five Republican-appointed justices essentially invented a one-time-only ruling to stop the recount. And that’s the relevant history in which to understand the Court’s decision to make up its own new legal theories about the regulation of the health-care market now.
Couldn’t agree more. It’s obvious that the decision itself was hastily structured to favor Bush. If you don’t agree, watch Recount, the film that … recounts the saga in strikingly neutral ways. Both sides actually admitted that it was quite accurate of what transpired in the lead up to the case.
(Also, that film is worth a viewing solely for Laura Dern’s portrayal of Katherine Harris. ALL THE AWARDS!)
Ving Rhames and Don Cheadle headline this fictionalized retelling of the Rosewood massacres, a 1923 incident in which a white mob used a white woman’s false rape allegations as the motivation to destroy a peaceful, predominately black town. Jon Voight, Bruce McGill and Michael Rooker also star in this poignant historical drama from Academy Award nominee John Singleton (Boyz n the Hood).

Daughter of Fla. Governor Who Criticized Anthropology Has a Degree in the Field
When Gov. Rick Scott of Florida singled out anthropology degrees as job-market losers in comments to a newspaper this week, he may have been speaking with inside knowledge, the Associated Press suggests. It turns out his daughter, Jordan Kandah, has a degree in anthropology from the College of William and Mary. Ms. Kandah did not go to work in that field, however, and is now pursuing an M.B.A., according to the AP.A spokesman said the governor didn’t mean to criticize anthropologists, just to make the point that there is a high demand now for graduates with degrees in engineering, mathematics, science, and technology — an emphasis Mr. Scott repeated on Wednesday as he outlined his economic plan for the next legislative session.
This is seriously too good to be true.
Florida is out of The Associated Press Top 25 poll.
Not just the Gators — the entire state.
For the first time since Dec. 6, 1982, no Sunshine State team was among the AP rankings on Sunday, marking the end of 472 straight polls where either Florida, Florida State or Miami — and usually all three — were on the list. Florida and Florida State both lost Saturday, the Gators losing at No. 1 LSU 41-11 and the Seminoles continuing their freefall with a 35-30 setback at Wake Forest.
The top 10 teams in the poll were unchanged. LSU, No. 2 Alabama, No. 3 Oklahoma, No. 5 Boise State, No. 6 Oklahoma State, No. 7 Stanford, No. 8 Clemson, No. 9 Oregon and No. 10 Arkansas all won by an average of 34.4 points. No. 4 Wisconsin was idle.
Fuck. You. Florida.
